Spine procedure

Anterior Cervical Discectomy & Fusion (ACDF)

A neck (cervical) spine surgery for disc herniations: the damaged disc is removed and a graft fuses the bones above and below it.

Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) is a type of spine surgery used to treat disc herniations in the neck.

When it is used

ACDF is used when a disc in the neck is herniated or degenerative. After the damaged disc is removed, a graft is used to fuse together the bones above and below it.

What it is designed to do

By removing the damaged disc and replacing the soft tissue with a graft, the procedure is designed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord and stabilize the spine, with the aim of reducing chronic neck and back pain.
